Things I'm looking forward to in 2012

There have been several memes floating around recently about looking back at 2011. I’d prefer to look forward so I thought I’d talk about some of the things I’m looking forward to this year. So here they are, in no particular order.

The Hobbit

Confession: I read The Hobbit for the first time only after years and multiple readings of The Lord of the Rings. Though I found the story charming I never connected with it as much as I did with LOTR. And I admit, before the first movie, I ranted about Jackson directing LOTR the movies. But they were gorgeous and even though some stuff that was important to me personally in the books was missing from the movie it was clear to me at least why they did it. And so I really think they’ll do the same for The Hobbit. Everything that’s available so far looks good.

The Hunger Games

My husband is eerily like Peeta so I loved the character instantly. I only found the books around November last year but once I started I just couldn’t put them down and it took me less than a week to read all three despite NaNoWriMo and the day job. Upon re-reading I found Katniss less likeable but Peeta was still the darling I remembered him as, so I’m anxiously waiting for the first movie and will definitely go to the movies for it.

Glamour in Glass

What can I say? I’ve been a fan of Jane Austen since I was in grade school and Mary Robinette Kowal’s first novel struck a nerve that I didn’t even realize needed striking. Basically, the first book in the series Shades of Milk and Honey is a Jane Austen story with magic. And not some sorry mashup either but an original piece of fiction in the themes and style of Austen. I’ve actually already read the next book Glamour in Glass (I got my copy from the author, no pirating) but I loved it so much that I can’t wait to get a physical copy in my hands.

My first story published

Last year, in October to be specific, a Finnish ebook distributer held a flash fiction contest for crime fiction no longer than a page. In a huge surprise I placed among the top 5. They only released the winner so I don’t know exactly which place I got but needless to say I was happy as a clown (and not a creepy clown either). In any case, the publisher will publish an anthology of the 20 best stories sometime this year and it will be my first story published by someone who is not me or a school paper.

Rammstein in Helsinki

In case you’ve never heard of them, Rammstein is a German band who play loud music with offensive (to some at least) lyrics. They’re coming to Helsinki on their tour and we’ve got tickets! The show was sold out in fifteen minutes, because Finns like their metal and ticket scalpers are douche bags that need to be put in the stocks for a while. But I’m digressing. Anyway, we’ve got tickets and I’m looking forward to it so much! Just for that, here’s a dose of Rammstein (warning, this video is SO NSFW, contains full male nudity from all angles).

Brave

Pixar’s first ever female lead is a fiery, red-headed Scott. How could I resist?

The Apocalypse Party

So finally the year of the supposed Mayan (and Nostradamus) apocalypse is upon us. Being the irreverent, immature person that I am, I am of course hosting a party on that date, because it is also the solstice. And, as stated previously, I LOVE the solstice. And because I can, that’s why.

What are you looking forward to?
